Here at Halewood Academy we are constantly working to promote reading for pleasure and a love of books for all. In the LRC, we have a relaxed, calm atmosphere with sofas, beanbags and comfy chairs to provide a place where students can come to read or study. The LRC has been structured to ensure that students feel welcome and supported on every visit. Resources include an array of fiction and non-fiction books to suit all tastes, magazines and Revision Guides- with a designated area for revision. The LRC is regularly well utilised and is an ideal place to complete homework with support on hand and read.
As a result of a Student Voice Survey, it was agreed that students could use their mobile phones to listen to music (with headphones) whilst in the LRC, if they are sitting reading or working at a computer. This is a privilege, as the LRC is the only area in the Academy where mobile phones are allowed to be used.
The LRC is open for students to use from 8.00am every day, every break time, every lunchtime and after school until 4.00pm. With effect from Monday 13th May, the LRC will be open until 4.15pm Monday to Thursday. There is one Wednesday in the month that it will close early.
We are constantly striving to engage as many students as possible from all year groups with events and competitions in the LRC. In April we ran ‘Easter Book Bingo’ across the Academy. Students selected books from an Easter Book Bingo Card and winners received Pride & Promise signatures when they had read 4 books. All entries then went in to a draw with Richie Longworth 7JCA winning the main prize: a large Easter egg.
This term we are running the ‘Summer Reading Challenge’. Pick up a slip from Mrs Fleming in the LRC and get reading to win some prizes!
KEY STAGE3 READING CLUB
Miss Traynor runs a Key Stage 3 Reading Club after school every Monday in the LRC. Come along if you enjoy reading or want to improve your reading ability!
CREATIVE WRITING CLUB
Ms Archer runs her Creative Writing Club after school every Thursday in the LRC. After the publication of the group’s first work – the Pride and Promises anthology – they are now working towards the publication of a book of short stories. Speak to her for more information.
If there is a book or magazine you would like to see available to read in the LRC or use for Revision, please take a ‘LRC READING REQUEST’ form from the Librarians desk. Complete details and hand it back to the Librarian, who will do her best to try and get it in to stock.
LRC JOBS We have a team of students from years 7, 8 and 9 that make up the LRC Team. Students are currently working through a Training Programme, take on duties in the LRC and provide assistance to other library users. The Team also helps the Librarian promote the LRC and a love of reading around the Academy and are Literacy Ambassadors in their lessons.
WORLD BOOK DAY
This year staff around the Academy dressed up as a character from their favourite book. Our English department chose characters from Roald Dahl books.
We ran ‘Caught Read Handed’ around the Academy and in the LRC. All students ‘caught’ reading during World Book Day week were handed a Raffle ticket. Ms Catterall drew out winners. First prize went to Seamus Parkinson from year 7 with 17 other students choosing stationery prizes.
We also held Staff Storytelling Sessions in the LRC, quizzes, word searches and competitions all related to books and reading.
We recently held a Scholastic Book Fair in the LRC which was very successful and as a result we will be receiving £170.00 in commission to purchase books for the LRC. LRC Team members will be able to suggest book titles they would like me to purchase.
