Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to:

Art, craft and design allows students to embody some of the highest forms of human creativity.
A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
Students should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

We aim to do this by:

Stimulating an interest in, and enjoyment of Art and Design.
Providing the opportunities and challenge for all to achieve their full potential.
Providing a relevant Art and Design curriculum.
Encouraging a culture of questioning and feeding the natural inquisitiveness of students.
Allowing students to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
Embedding reading and literacy across the department using a range of teaching and learning strategies to develop pupil’s vocabulary and understanding.
Providing the best possible standard of teaching and opportunities for learning.

What do we expect learners to get from studying Art and Design?

Students will be taught to develop their creativity and ideas, and increase proficiency in their execution. They should develop a critical understanding of artists, architects and designers, expressing reasoned judgements that can inform their own work.

Opportunities to use a range of techniques to record their observations in sketchbooks, journals and other media as a basis for exploring their ideas
Experiences using a range of techniques and media, including painting
Ability to increase their proficiency in the handling of different materials
Opportunities to analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others, in order to strengthen the visual impact or applications of their work
An appreciation for the history of art, craft, design and architecture, including periods, styles and major movements from ancient times up to the present day
Students achieve economic well-being through academic success and the associated opportunities in Art and Design careers and further study.
Engaging and stimulating lessons lead to students enjoying lessons and making accelerated progress.
