Our Mathematics curriculum is designed to create an environment so our students will become independent resilient learners, who enjoy and appreciate the power of mathematics through:

  • Working collaboratively to problem solve and develop logical skills.
  • Delivering an aspirational, accessible and adaptive curriculum through a variety of strategies bringing depth, challenge and support.
  • To experience and fully master mathematical concepts in and out of the classroom.
  • To understand the sequence from their previous learning to their current thinking and links to future employment opportunities.
  • To create life chances for every student so they leave the academy with the skills, direction and experiences to flourish in any career in the world.

We aim to do this by:

  • Encouraging all pupils to enjoy and fully engage with Mathematics.
  • Providing high quality support and opportunities for pupils of all ability.
  • Fully preparing our students for the GCSE examinations.
  • Providing all students with a sound understanding of functional mathematics for academic and working life.
  • Using a variety of teaching methods and activities to enhance the learning experience
  • Using assessment and feedback methods that allow students to know and understand their targets and their current performance levels, and what they need to do to improve

What do we expect students to get from studying Mathematics?

  • To enable everyone to be confident and competent in using numbers and data in their daily life
  • Experience high quality engaging lessons promoting enjoyment of mathematical experiences and achievements
  • Develop fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills
  • Solve problems in a diverse range of situations
  • The Maths that you study in preparation for your GCSE exams can be split into five main topics: Number, Algebra, Ratio and proportion, Geometry and Measures and Statistics and Probability.
  • Our lessons focus on supporting students and challenging them to deepen their understanding.
  • Proficiency in maths is essential for adult life so we aim to ensure that all our students are able to make fantastic progress and become confident mathematicians.

Students, in all year groups, are set homework once per week on Sparx Maths and are encouraged to use this as a revision tool. Students all have individual logins and parent guides are available on the website.

Numeracy

Within the department and across the school, we focus on improving the numeracy skills of all students to improve their ability to apply numeracy to all subjects. Students will receive numeracy homework in all subjects and regular numeracy competitions, trips and celebration days are ran throughout the year.
